The world’s next greatest vacation spots

1. Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei has recently seen an ambitious campaign of urban renewal. The city has seen the opening of 45 new hotels that focus on the trend of designer and boutique lodgings. With this energy, it is all set to become one of the top destinations to visit in 2015. Shop at destination malls like Taipei 101, check out the art scene in Boho, and take in the architecture – both modern and traditional – that the city has to offer.

2. Myanmar

After five decades of military rule, this Indian neighbour is welcoming tourists from around the world with open arms. Cultural wonders like the temples of Bagan give a feel of Angkor Wat, minus the crowds. And there are pristine stretches of beaches too, if a seaside vacation is what you are looking for. Improved infrastructure in terms of more flights (both domestic and international) and new roads make exploring the country far easier than it was. There are also several five-star resorts being built, many offering fast broadband.

3. Siem Reap, Cambodia

The beautiful Angkor Wat temple (built in 12th century) has always attracted tourists from across the world, and still brings thousands of travellers to the ancient city Siem Reap. Cambodia also vigilantly implements forward-thinking plans to ensure it’s around for generations to enjoy. In this city where the future and past come together, the temple isn’t all that calls out to visitors – you can also relax at one of the many new upmarket resorts after flying into the slick revamped airport.

4. Seoul, South Korea

The country that gave us Psy and his ‘Oppan Gangnam Style’! There’s no stopping the hunger for Korean pop culture, and that’s bringing tourists to Seoul in droves. Just the global popularity of that song has brought in visitors, and has stores engage the biggest names in K-pop to drive sales – stores that also happen to reside in the world’s largest duty-free market, which has tourists from China going head over heels. The city has been building budget hotels, so that should take care of your accommodation too.

5. Iceland

If you have seen 'Interstellar' or 'Star Wars: Episode VII', or are a fan of the television sensation 'Game of Thrones', you already know how fascinating Iceland is. The country is all set to be one of the most popular for vacation in 2015. Be enthralled by the Northern Lights, hot springs, and Europe’s largest ice tunnel (actually built within an iceberg) – for truly unforgettable moments! There are new budget routes in Europe too, making travelling to Iceland easier than ever before.

6. Colombo, Sri Lanka

Here’s another neighbour to pay a visit to. With Sri Lanka’s civil war a thing of the past, Colombo is ready for the world to visit. Now with improved rail and road connections, many parts of the country that were previously not exactly accessible to outsiders have become more so. Foodies will have a great time sampling the delectable cuisine and inspired drinks at places like The Ministry of Crab. And movie buffs can be a part of history with the new International Film Festival of Colombo.

7. Brazil

Brazil was already a fantastic vacation destination, but the FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympics have catapulted the country as a global hot spot for travellers in 2015. Exploring the country is now far easier with new airport terminals, new roads and improved rail systems. Tourism in the country is as diverse as tours through the favelas of Rio and trips through the Amazon. New hotels built for the Olympics are sure to pamper you with luxuries too.

8. Bhutan

This Himalayan kingdom has always had an air of mystique due to its remoteness. But now, the country is more accessible by air and has been seeing more tourists. If you're the adventurous type, here’s where you get to go rafting, kayaking and motorcycling. You will also find events like the Tour of the Dragon for bicyclists and the Snowman Trek through the mountains of the area. Hiking through the jungles of the region must be experienced to be believed, especially for nature buffs – you are sure to fall in love with lush flora and fauna.

Visitors may even find themselves walking into a major Hollywood or Bollywood film production. Or you could kick back and relax at one of the quirky bars and restaurants across from the world famous Surfers Paradise. Over the next few years, the city is set to grow as a tourist destination, as it prepares to host the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
