THE MAIN ATTRACTIONS OF MONACO

Monaco Cathedral

Monaco comes second to the Vatican as the second smallest independent state. While it is deprived of natural resources, it has the perfect balance of historic and modern-day attractions. Museums and palaces are there to remind locals and tourists of what the state had to endure to attain independence. Meanwhile, newly built shopping malls and casinos may be taken as signs of progress. All the while you can take a break from the hustles and bustles of Monaco by heading on over to harbour. That’s where some of the most relaxing tourist spots are located. Anyway, navigating through the meandering roads of Monaco is quite easy so getting from one place to another won’t stir trouble.

Monaco-Ville is perhaps one of the most picturesque sites in the state. It is a medieval village whose historic houses, passageways, and streets remain intact. A few hotels, restaurants, and shops are within the area. Also within Monaco-Ville are a few more tourist spots like the Cathedral, City Hall, Prince’s Palace, Oceanographic Museum, and Saint Martin Gardens. Besides Monaco-Ville is another old district, La Condamine. It doesn’t have as much historical landmarks but it has cruise ships and yachts docked on the marina.
The Prince’s Palace or what locals call Palais Princier comes with guided tours. From there, you can enjoy a breath-taking panoramic view of Monte Carlo and the Port. A changing of the guard ceremony takes place everyday in front of the Palace’s main entrance. You are free to watch this rather entertaining spectacle. The Monaco Cathedral which dates back to 1875 has a Romanesque-Byzantine architecture – a sight you shouldn’t miss. If you’re tagging along kids, you should take them to the Oceanographic Museum and Aquarium where large collections of preserved and live marine life are open for viewing.

Jardin Exotique is another main attraction and one of the top reasons to visit Monaco. It may be one of the many gardens found in the state but what sets it apart is its collection of rare plant life. Hundreds of species of rare plants thrive within its grounds. If you fancy art and music, you can stop over the Monaco Opera House and Marlborough Fine Arts Gallery. The opera house is extravagant and decorated with frescoes and sculptures. The Marlborough Fine Arts Gallery is not as heavily decorated but it has one of the finest art collections in the state, including works by Pablo Picasso.
