LUXEMBOURG, THE SMALL EUROPEAN COUNTRY WITH BIG ATTRACTIONS

Grand Ducal Palace, Luxembourg

Just by its name, you can get a hint that Luxembourg is filled with extravagant landmarks. Historic structures with elaborate architecture are spread across different cities. Besides being rich in history, the land is blessed by nature. Dense forests, wild rivers, and a few caves can be found along its outskirts. Luxembourg is an example of what a travel destination should be – diverse and a provider of different kinds of attractions.

Believe it or not, Luxembourg is actually one of the smallest countries in Europe. It’s quite impressive considering its diversity of tourist spots. One place you should never miss is the city of Luxembourg, the country’s capital. Oddly enough, it only holds a small population as most people live in rural regions. Set on top of a high cliff, the city overlooks the rivers of Alzette and Pétrusse without much fear. The city of Luxembourg has an old town. It is the original settlement of the city before expanding to its current state. The old town of Luxembourg is on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
One of the top reasons to visit Luxembourg city is the Gothic Revival Cathedral of Notre Dame. Its two forts are also must-see attractions. The Grand Ducal Palace and its surrounding cobblestone lanes should never be missed. Other sights to see in Luxembourg city include Bock casemates, Nemunster Abbey, and Place d’Armes. Some World War II memorial sites and museums showcasing local art, historical pieces, and artifacts are within city bounds for daytime tours.

Ecternach is Luxembourg’s oldest city. One of the country’s most prolific religious architecture, Abbey of Ecternach, is in this city. During Whit Tuesday, an annual festival held in Echternach, you can join local dancers to celebrate. Located nearby is Mullerthal or “Little Switzerland”. The area is characterized by thick forests. Mullerthal is easily accessible from Ecternach city and has trails which you can take by foot or traverse with a bike.
Finally, there is the charming village of Vianden. Its highlight is the Beaufort castle, a Medieval structure surrounded by forests and located near a lake. Quite honestly, it looks like a fairy tale castle from different angles and the scenery adds up to such a romantic atmosphere. Gothic churches, fortifications, and the Victor Hugo House is just a walk away from the castle. After touring around town, you can rest at Grand Rue and have yourself a snack.
