10 OF THE BEST THINGS TO DO IN MARRAKECH

1. Watch the Sun Set over the Medina

One of the best things to do in Marrakech is to eat. The best dining experience in Marrakech is to be had in the early evening at a rooftop bar or restaurant overlooking the Medina. As the sun sets in the distance the bustling square begins to come to life – so be sure to arrive early to secure the best seats overlooking the Medina. Hot spots: Cafe de France and Chez Chegrouni.

2. Get Lost in the Souks

This labyrinth of seemingly endless stalls selling everything from leather goods to spices to olives to….. you name it, is an absolute must-see for first, second, and third time visitors to Marrakech. There’s always something new to be found, something different to be seen, and more experiences to be had inside this bustling market that is unlike any other in the world. It’s easy to spend an entire day here, and with the relentless feeling of ‘the unknown’ being just around the corner, it is difficult to steer yourself away if you have an inquisitive mind. There are carpets, kaftans, blankets, Moroccan tea sets, and a range of other inventive goods on offer. This experience simply can not be missed for visitors to Marrakech!

3. Visit the Koutoubia Mosque

First and foremost, non-muslims are not able to enter this active place of worship. It is however worth a visit to circle the Mosque and enjoy its unique architecture from the ground below. It stands at just 77 metres tall, but with the height restrictions on buildings in Marrakech, it gloriously towers above its surrounds.

4. Majorelle Garden

The Majorelle Garden was once owned by Yves Saint-Laurent, which should be reason enough to visit this obviously opulent display of Moroccan nature. His ashes were even scattered here upon his passing in 2008.

5. Try a traditional Hammam

This unique and grounding experience is one that should be enjoyed by all first time visitors to Morocco. The ritual takes place on a hot stone floor which can at times become uncomfortable, but with an open mind it is enjoyed regardless. Prices are reflected in the establishments themselves, so if you’re looking to splash out head to one of the spas inside one of the top hotels.

6. Bahia Palace

Built in the 19th Century, the name Bahia translated into English as ‘Brilliance’. There are also magnificent gardens to enjoy around the Palace.

7. El Badi Palace

El Badi translates into ‘The Incomparable’ in English. While visitors can now only enjoy what remains, it is certainly worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Marrakech royalty.

8. Visit a Modern Day Palace

The Royal Mansour was created by King Mohammed VI with an open-ended budget and only one request; to create something uber spectacular. The result is perhaps one of the most beautiful displays of Moroccan architecture and artistry in the modern world. If a night at the Palace is out of your budget, be sure to visit either the day spa for a treatment or the bar for early evening drinks, just to ensure you can get beyond the palace walls and discover this opulent masterpiece.

9. Saadian Tombs

The Saadian Tombs are located near the Kasbah Mosque and are well worth a visit whilst in Marrakech. The tombs are now open to visitors to enjoy at leisure or with an informative guide, depending on your level of interest in this unique attraction.

10. Marrakech Museum

The Marrakech Museum can be found in the Dar Menebhi Palace and is a great opportunity for intrigued visitors to understand and appreciate Morocco’s cultural past.
