Plitvice Lakes National Park – Croatia (Southeast Europe)

A few places in earth can dazzle you with their natural beauty and perfection, Plitvice Lake National Park is one amongst those places. The oldest and largest national park is located in hilly Karst area of CroatiaSoutheast Europe. The precise location of the park falls in the locale which includes border of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Plitvice Lakes National Park is founded in 1949, soon became the part of UNESCO world heritage site in 1979. The total area included in the park is over 296.85 square kilometres (73,350 acres). The protected area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park is distributed over two countries including Lika-Senj country, which includes 90% of the area and Karlovac, which includes 10% of the total area. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is outstanding in all regards i.e. flora, fauna, lakes, rivers, landscapes and waterfalls, the two waterfalls in the park are Veliki slap (Large Waterfall) and Galovački buk (Galovac Waterfall). The rivers include Bijela Rijeka (English White River) and Crna Rijeka (English Black River).

The famous lakes in Plitvice Lakes National Park are Prošćansko jezero, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, Batinovac, Veliko jezero, Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milinovo jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Buk, Kozjak, Milanovac, Gavanovac, Kaluđerovac and Novakovića brod.

The flora and fauna is exceptional. Some of the endemic and rare plant species found in Plitvice Lakes National Park include Edraianthus tenuifolius, Ranunculus scutatus, Scilla litardierei, Cypripedium calceolus, Ligularia sibirica, Common butterwort (Pinguicula vulgaris), Telekia speciosa and Daphne laureola. Amongst the diversified animal species the rare ones are European brown bear, wolf, eagle, owl, lynx, wild cat and capercaillie.

There is a nominal entrance fee of 180 kuna or around $32USD, especially in peak season. Most of the people appreciate the natural enigmatic beauty and call it as heaven on earth. You can visit the place and decide on your own as said by most of the people that the place is much more than what it looks like in pictures and the camera does no justification for the beauty the eye can witness.
