Folsom Lake located at the base of Sierra hills; Northern California is serving as a reservoir since 1955. The formulation of the lake was due to construction of Folsom Dam with the main purpose to control American River. The Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is quite of an interest and managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. The lake is a beautiful recreational spot with multiple entries and 75 miles of shorelines. The lake has faced several drought issues in 2013 and as a result of it the submerged Mormon Island reappeared after 58 years. This reappearing island is a point of interest for most of the tourists. The lake lost it beauty after the drought and needed a point of interest for visitors along with the park.
The visitors can perform various activities including hiking, biking, running, camping, picnicking, horseback riding, water-skiing and boating. The fishing lovers can find trout, catfish, big and small mouth bass or perch. There is a 32-mile long bicycle path for cyclists. The path connects Folsom Lake with many Sacramento County parks before reaching Old Sacramento. The Lake Natoma is the downstream of Folsom Lake and is popular for crew races, sailing, kayaking and other aquatic sports.
The visitors pay nominal fees of $10 to $12 depending on the access location. The lake is mostly known for the boating and water sports. The place is also best known for hiking and running trails. There is some potable water available at campgrounds and established access points for visitors but if hiking and running on trails you must carry your own water as you may not come across water for several miles. The water level gets low in summer which halts the boating activity. The Google review for the place is 4 stars.
