To be honest with you, I had never even heard of Palau before researching for this post. Apparently, Palau is a dream-come-true for avid scuba divers and adventure seekers.
2. Mongolia (476,000)
The far away land of Mongolia is a place of blooming wilderness, mountains, wild horses, authentic culture, and incredible landscapes.
3. The Faeroe Islands (no report)
Is there a more picturesque landscape than that of the Faeroe Islands? Welcome to another world!
4. Macedonia (351,000)
Despite the growing number of tourists, Macedonia is still a relatively undiscovered place to travel to. If you like to explore locations that are off the beaten path, Macedonia is a perfect country for you to visit.
5. Liechtenstein (54,000)
Liechtenstein is one of the smallest, richest and most beautiful countries on our little big planet. Nevertheless, it is also one of the least visited countries in Europe. The reason? Liechtenstein doesn’t have an airport so getting there is a pain in the ass.
6. Moldova (11, 000)
Even though Moldova has became a more popular destination during the last decade, it is usually still at the bottom of people’s bucket lists. High prices and low quality of service in Moldova scare off a lot of potential tourists. The country, however, is a great place to travel to. It has a rich history of wine making, fantastic ancient castles and fortresses, and the nature there is just breathtakingly beautiful!
7. Greenland (no report)
Greenland is seriously underestimated as a travel destination. Perhaps, it is too far away for an ordinary traveller’s taste, but, for a true adventurer, visiting Greenland is a must. This country offers unique experiences, such as sailing among icebergs, dog sledding, ice cap trekking, wildlife spotting, whale watching, hiking, and visiting the Norse ruins… Greenland is IT.
8. Madagascar (256,000)
Despite beautiful endemic wildlife, spectacular beaches, and astounding biodiversity, the Madagascar travel industry isn’t even close to reaching its full potential. The government is working extremely hard to promote tourism in Madagascar, where 70% of the population still lives in poverty.
9. Monaco (292,000)
Are you surprised to hear that Monaco is one of the least visited countries in the world? I was, too! But the thing about Monaco is that, being the world’s most densely populated country, it simply cannot fit a lot of tourists into it. Plus, Monaco isn’t really notable for its spectacular nature spots – it is, instead, a huge resort where you marvel at luxurious yachts, whilst wearing Prada sunglasses and elegant outfits, and driving a rented Lamborghini along the coast… Not exactly a place for backpackers.
10. St. Vincent and the Grenadines (74,000)
Also simply known as St. Vincent, the whole country is made up of just one island, which is only 389 square km in size. But the beautiful beach landscapes of St. Vincent are, nevertheless, quite easily recognisable – this is where The Pirates of the Caribbean film series was shot.
11. Bhutan (105,000)
In 1974, there were only 287 tourists who visited Bhutan. In some 40 years, the number of people travelling to the country has increased by 36, 585%. Yes, you heard it right – 36, 585%. Nevertheless, Bhutan is still considered to be one of the most well-hidden gems in Asia.
12. Belarus (119,000)
Even though The Republic of Belarus is situated in the very centre of Europe, it is one of the least visited countries on the continent. Why? Because the urban image of Belarusian cities is still pretty much stuck in the last century, and not in a good way. Belarus is basically an advanced-looking version of the Soviet Union. The streets are clean and broad, the buildings are neat and white, and, even though there are sprinkles of western influences here and there, like McDonalds or famous brand shops, you feel like you have travelled back in time to Stalinist Russia.
13. Kiribati (4,900)
Kiribati, a small island nation in Oceania, is literally in the middle of nowhere. It is hard to reach for a common traveller, which, maybe, is a good thing because the place has retained its peacefulness and tranquility. Kiribati has also got some of the world’s most upscale fishing destinations.
14. The Solomon Islands (24,000)
If you’ve been looking for the paradise lost, you’ve finally found it. The Solomon Islands is a hidden retreat for beach-lovers who are looking for blue, peace and tranquility.
15. Tajikistan (244,000)
Tajikistan is always a good idea. That’s what Audrey Hepburn could have said. But she didn’t because Tajikistan is a real godforsaken corner that the people of the modern world hardly hear of on a daily basis. For those roaming further afield, Tajikistan is a godsend.
16. The Marshall Islands (4,600)
The Marshall Islands is officially the least visited country in the whole world. The extreme remoteness and the lack of connection with the rest of the world are the two main reasons why the Islands are so unpopular among tourists. But if you want to travel to discover solitude, The Marshall Islands is the right destination for you.
