Derinkuyu Underground City, Cappadocia, Turkey. Carved into soft volcanic rock in the 8th–7th centuries B.C. by the Phrygians, the city used to serve as a shelter from invasions. The city is 60 meters deep and is connected with other underground cities in the area by the tunnels, that extend for kilometers.
The city has a chapel, a religious school, storage rooms, refectories. The moving stone doors blocked the way to the city and from outside left no evidence of a secret entrance. It could house over 20,000 people! Today most of it is open for the tourists.
