While the Parthenon is almost certainly the most famous site in Greece, the archaeological site of Knossos also should not be missed. Located on the large southern island of Crete, Knossos offers a fascinating look at one of Europe’s oldest civilizations.
Knossos Palace
The main feature of Knossos is the palace complex, which offers a fascinating glimpse into one of the region’s oldest and most mysterious civilizations. Spread over 24,000 square meters, the palace contains 1,300 rooms.

At its peak, the site was home to over 100,000 people, and was serviced by a complex water management system. Some of the notable art of the site includes the distinctive Minoan columns, made from Cypress trunks and painted red, and the frescoes of men leaping over the backs of large bulls.
Knossos Archaeological Site
Knossos is believed to have been the capital of the Minoan civilization, which reigned in the eastern Mediterranean around 2000 B.C., and the home of the mythical King Minos and his fearsome Minotaur. The area was conquered by the mainland Mycenaean’s around 1450 B.C. and later became a Roman colony.
Knossos was rebuilt at least twice before being definitively destroyed around 1350 B.C. The site was rediscovered in 1878, and subsequent excavations and extensive (and controversial) restorations were carried out by the British archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans.
Other things to do in Crete
Any visit to Knossos is well complimented by a tour of the enormous Heraklion Archaeological Museum, and in fact a combined entrance ticket for both sites is available. The museum contains a multitude of fine examples of Minoan frescoes, pottery, and jewelry.

Venturing out from Heraklion, Crete has plenty more attractions to offer the visitor. The northern coast has been built up as a massive beach holiday destination, with a wide range of hotels and beach houses for rent. Other popular sites on Crete include the charming city of Chania, Venetian fortress of Rethymnon, and the breathtaking gorge of Samaria.
