3 MUST-SEE HISTORICAL PLACES IN ARMENIA

Khor Virap Monastery in the shadow of Mount Ararat

The Sanahin Monastery was built during the 10th century at the province of Lori. It was named after the Armenian word sanahin which means “this one is older than that that one.” Historians believe this is in reference to Haghpat Monastery which was presumably built at an earlier date. Not that many people visit Sanahin but in the past few years, more touring agencies have included it in their itinerary.

Sanahin Monastery is far from extravagant. It has a simple architecture just like Haghpat. If you pay close attention to the khachkars, they have detailed engravings of the cross. Around the monastery are the graveyard and several more structures like the library and St. Gregory chapel.
The Haghpat Monastery is situated in Haghpat, Armenia. Saint Sourb Nshan founded it in the 10th century under the reign of King Abas I. It blends Byzantine with traditional Caucasian architecture. The Haghpat Monastery shares the same architectural elements as Sanahin. The oldest structure in the complex is the St. Nishan Church which was started in 966 to 967 BC before it was enlarged and decorated with embellishments. The Cathedral of St. Nishan is the largest building in the site, dating back to around 967 to 991 BC. The cathedral is dominated by a dome resting on four pillars. This is typical of Armenian architecture during the 10th century.

Last but not the least is Goris. Goris isn’t a historical structure but an Armenian city surrounded by them. The city is part of Syunik Province and one of the top reasons to visit Armenia.
On the east side of Goris is Old Khndoresk or what locals call Hin Khndzoresk. It is an ancient cave settlement which remained occupied until a few decades ago. Just 16 kilometers south of the city is the Bgheno Noravank Monastery. Most tourists don’t know about it but it’s worth checking out. An even older monastery is Tsitsernavank located 8 kilometers north of the Karabakh entryway. Finally, there is the Tatev Monastery. Tatev is 30 kilometers southwest from Goris. It rests on tall 850-meter cliff and towers over a cavern, springs, and a bridge. Other than its surroundings, the Tatev Monastery itself is a sight to see.
