Isabela Island – Galapagos (Equador)

A well said quote by Henry David Thoreau Walden goes as “We need the tonic of wildness. At the same time that we are earnest to explore and learn all things, we require that all things be mysterious and haven’t been explored, that land and sea be indefinitely wild, unsurvey and unfathomed by us because unfathomable. We can never have enough of nature.” And yes you cannot have enough of nature especially when you are in Isabela Island. Isabela is an Island with erupting volcanoes, unique flora and diversified fauna.

The island is called as Isabella Island (Spanish pronunciation: [isaˈβela]) after the Queen Isabella of Spain. Isabela Island located in Galapagos; Equador (South America) is the largest of the Galapagos Islands. The map of the Island is said to resemble a sea horse. The total area of the island is 4,640 square kilometres (1,790 sq. mi), and length of 100 kilometres (62 mi).

The Isabela Island has an amazing geology and has one of the most active volcanic activities in the world. The island was formed by the fusion of 6 shield volcanoes – Alcedo, Cerro Azul, Darwin, Ecuador, Sierra Negra and Wolf from one million years from today. The Equador is the only volcano that is inactive while all others including Alcedo, Cerro Azul, Darwin, Sierra Negra and Wolf are still active. Volcan Ecuador and Volcan Wolf lying directly on equator, make the highest point of the island with an elevation of 5,600 feet or 1,707 meters.

The Diversified Fauna of the Isabela Island includes tortoise, penguins, cormorants, marine iguanas, boobies, pelicans, Sally Lightfoot crabs abound, Darwin’s finches, Galápagos hawks and Galápagos doves. The island can also be used to observe the rich marine life. The amazing activity of the dolphins and whales can also be observed at the west coast of Bolivar Channel and this is something that cannot be observed anywhere.

The walk through the mangrove forest is itself exhilarating. Another story of history attached to this island is that it was once used as a prison.
