Visiting Lake Titicaca was on my bucket list since a long time.
Back then, the only thing I knew about it was that it was the highest lake in the world. Much to my disappointment I learned later, that it was the highest ‘navigable’ lake in the world and that there are at least dozens of other bodies of water that are located higher than the one I am writing about today, but if you ever want to take a ride on a large vessel on the lake, this is as high as you can do it. Pretty cool, right?
Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) the rocky island that is located in the southern part of the Titicaca Lake is my main topic for today.
It is only inhabited by around few hundred people and when you go there you won’t see any paved roads. If there are no roads then you won’t see cars either!
What you will see though are stunning 360 degrees views of the lake, inca ruins, small villages and eucalyptus forests. All that within a few hour trek from the northern to the southern part of the island.
Trekking at this altitude (almost 4000 m a.s.l.) might be a bit challenging but I guarantee you won’t regret it for a minute!
