Geology

Half Dome is almost as whole as ever. But it is assumed by a number of visitors that when it is seen from the valley floors it seems as a round dome, which has lost its northeast side. This concept is totally a myth. Only from the Glacier or Washburn Point, this dome can be seen as a long narrow range of hills, oriented northeast to southwest, with its southeast side as steep as northeast side.

The Half Dome’s Cable route hiking runs from the floor of the valley to the top of the dome in 8.2miles(13km). Total natural elevation of the entire journey is 4,800ft (1,460m).
