Broome
Broome is a pearling and a beautiful tourist town located on in the Kimberley region of Western Australia, yet not that many people outside Australia have heard of it. A seriously laid back and friendly place it’s a town where backpackers kick back and stay for a while. Known for its gorgeous scenery exotic shopping (it’s a great place to buy rare pink diamonds or Broome pearls) highlights include bird watching, pretty Roebuck Bay and the pure white sandy Cable beach where the sun sets are truly out of this world.
Cradle Mountain
Tasmania is now starting to be taken more seriously as a tourist destination but it’s wild unspoilt landscapes are still vastly underrated. The pick of the bunch is Cradle Mountain, one of Australia’s best wildness areas. Located in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park the mountain is composed of distinctive dolerite columns and many visitors tackle the climb each year. For the less adventurous more serene walks are a better option and one of the best ways to take in the gorgeous lake and mountain scenery.
Kangaroo Island
Located in South Australia this is the country’s third largest island and to get to it you will need to get a ferry a short flight from Adelaide. It’s a truly beautiful place and it’s location a little off the main tourist drag means it hasn’t been affected by major tourism. Expect to see vast areas of untouched bushland and pristine empty beaches although arguably the biggest draw is the wildlife. Similar to a zoo but without the bars the surrounding sea is filled with fish, sea lions, colonies of blue penguins and at certain times of the year migrating whales. On land you might even catch a glimpse of albino wallabies and of course plenty of koalas and kangaroos.
Phillip Island
Phillip Island can be found around 140km South East of Melbourne and although it requires a little planning to get there it’s more than worth the detour. The island has vast amounts of undulating terrain complete with mangrove flats, wetlands, wild bushland and long stretches of gorgeous sandy beaches. Although this is another island which is a nature lover’s paradise. It’s arguably most famous for its cute resident fairy penguins which walk from the sea to their burrows at sun down but also fur seals which sun themselves on the island’s rocks and the countless rare birds nestle in the coastal cliffs.
Oak Beach, Port Douglas
Queensland is one of the most visited places in Australia but even here you can still find some seriously overlooked beauty spots. A great example is Oak Beach which is said to be one of the most underrated beaches in the whole of country. With gorgeous palm-fringed scenery and solitude by the bucket loads this is a sub tropical paradise renowned for its exclusivity – Natalie Imbruglia was married here and many other celebrities have built holiday homes in the area. Although visitors are still welcome and the area practically acts a private beach for the deluxe eco resort the Thala Beach Lodge. Other highlights include its very own inner coral reef and a World Heritage listed rainforest right behind.
