Canals are human-made passages for water. People have built canals from the early age of civilization. Canals are usually made for irrigation and an inevitable part of agriculture. As the ancient cities are flourished in agricultural area, they have many canals. Often cities are identified with canals. Today we enlisted some of the most famous canals in the world.
10. Stockholm Canals
Well known as the “Venice of the North”, Stockholm is situated on 14 islands in Sweden. It is interconnecting all the islands. It looks like there are canals and boats everywhere. A great way to explore the islands is to rent a canoe or kayak and paddling between the city’s islands.
9. Alappuzha
Alappuzha is an ancient and beautiful city, full of canals in India. The city is also known as the Venice of the East. Alappuzha is connected to the famous Kerala backwaters. It is the most popular tourist attractions in Alappuzha. Alappuzha is famous for Snake Boat Race where teams of rowers compete for the Nehru Trophy.

Thai name for canals is “Klong”. People used klongs for transportation and commerce throughout Thailand. Numerous wooden boats passing through the canals are really a wonderful view.
7. Nan Madol
Nan Madol is a series of small artificial islands situated off the eastern shore of the island of Pohnpei, in Micronesia. Probably in 8th century, the construction of the islands started but the unique megalithic architecture of Nan Madol was approximately between the 1200 and 1300 AD. .It has some beautiful canals.
6. Suzhou Canals
Renowned as “The Venice of China,” Suzhou is situated in Eastern China on the lower Yangtze River. The city was founded in the 5th century BC. It is famous for its marvelous waterways, its labyrinthine gardens and historic stone bridges. Suzhou is also known for its silk trade and for its vicinity to the Grand Canal. This canal is one of the longest waterway trade routes in the world.
5. Panama Canal
Panama Canal is famous for connecting Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. The ship canal is 77 km (48 mile) long and changed the course of shipping and travel. Finished in 1914, the canal enables ships to pass through sets of locks to get from one side to the other and remove the need for ships to take longer and dangerous route around the point of South America. Every year around 14,000 ships pass the Panama Canal.
4. Hoi An
Hoi An, formally was a fishing village has turned into a tourist-hotspot for it’s marvelous canals. It is situated on the coast of the South China Sea in Vietnam.Although the shipping business has long since moved to the city of Da Nang, Hoi An has been an international port from the 16th century. The heart of the city still lies in the Old Town, full of Chinese-styled shop houses and winding lanes.

Canals of Bruges are world famous for their beauty. Bruges is a well preserved medieval city in Europe and Belgium’s most popular attraction. Bruges is often called ‘The Venice of the North’ because of its canals. The ‘Reie’ river had been turned into a network of canals in the middle Ages that helped the traders to bring their products to the large Water Halls at the Market. A boat ride on these famous canals can make you feel dreamy.

Amsterdam, a city of canals is called “The Venice of the North”. It has more than 100 canals. In the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, Amsterdam began building its famous canals. The three main canals are Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht known as the grachtengordel. These canals were placed on the “World Heritage Site”.
