Huangguoshu Falls

Huangguoshu Waterfall, situated in the province of Anshun in China, is the tallest waterfall in Asia at 255ft (77.8m) high and 331ft (101m) wide. It’s name, ‘Huangguoshu’, literally translates to ‘yellow fruit tree’. The falls and the surrounding area form ‘Huangguoshu Waterfall National Park’, which is rated by the Chinese Tourism board as AAAAA, the highest available grading for a scenic area.

Interesting facts about Huangguoshu Waterfall

• The Huangguoshu Waterfall National Park comprises 18 waterfalls of various sizes, some majestic in size, and others smaller yet picturesque. Of these, Huangguoshu is both the tallest and the most famous, though others such as the Doupotang (widest), Lousitan, Silver-Chain and Dishuitan waterfalls are certainly worthy of note.
• Approximately 300 years ago, the famous Chinese explorer/geologist Xu Xiake was quoted saying, “the foams rise from the rocks like a mist. The waterfall is with such a momentum that even the couplet ‘a screen of pearl released from hooks/or silk that hangs on faraway peaks’ cannot describe to the full its majesty”.
• Behind the waterfall lies the Water-Curtain Cave (“Shuiliandong" in Chinese), a 440ft (134m) natural cave formation. Approximately 130ft (40m) from the base of the waterfall and 440ft (134m) long, the cave offers a striking viewpoint of the waterfall. Further, when crossing the cave on a sunny day, visitors are able to spot stunning rainbows on the Xiniu Pond from various cave ‘windows’.
• The water crashes down from the river into the Xiniu Pond, creating a thundering noise that can be heard from far away.
• The area has a moderate climate, with an average temperature of 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius) and importantly, fresh air.
