Most Beautiful Beaches in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro is famous for its amazing beaches and boy, there are a lot of them. Our Rio locals have shared five of their favourites so you too can experience the most beautiful beaches in town.

1. Arpoador

Arpoador is a small peninsula located between the well-known neighbourhoods of Copacabana and Ipanema. Besides being a popular surfing spot, Arpoador offers views of some of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see. During midsummer, it’s possible to witness the sun setting over the sea – a rare occurrence in Brazil. You’re better off visiting this beach during the week as it’s completely packed on weekends.

2. Grumari

This is one of few unspoiled beaches located so close to the city. It’s a little slice of paradise that’s easily accessible by car or surf bus. Compared to other beaches in and around Rio, it’s off the beaten track and definitely less crowded. Remember to bring cash as there are no ATMs in the area.

3. Praia da Joatinga

This beach is at the mercy of the tides. When it’s high tide, the sea leaves almost no space for people on the sand, but when the tide is low, the little sandy strip becomes a beautiful paradise. Getting here can be tricky, but trust us – the trip will be more than worth your while.

4. Ipanema Beach

Ipanema is the beach where everyone goes. Despite being crowded and somewhat touristy, it’s totally different to the world-famous Copacabana. There are specific zones called postos along the beach: posto 8 is gay-friendly, posto 9 is marijuana-friendly and a bit hippie/alternative andposto 10 is preppy but still laidback. Take a walk along the beach and see if you can spot the differences!

5. Prainha

Prainha is located quite far from the centre of Rio. Although it takes about 45 minutes to reach from Barra da Tijuca, it’s totally worth the trip. It’s located in a protected area and is only visited by locals. It’s the perfect place to escape the crowds you see on the city beaches. Prainha is also very popular among surfers, but be careful – the waves and tides are dangerous.
