This classification was due to the outstanding tourism elements offered by the Sultanate for tourists, which combines the nobility of traditional Arab culture and modernity.

This evaluation is of great importance to the Ministry of Tourism's efforts to make the Sultanate a leading tourist destination in the Middle East by offering ideal packages for short holidays, including sport tourism activities, as well as recreational and cultural activities.

This rating comes in conjunction with the statistical information that confirms the growing number of tourists coming to the Sultanate during recent years. According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, 2.1 million tourists visited the Sultanate in 2013. The number increased last year and there are plans to provide a variety of tourist services in 2015.

Cultural monuments
The increasing number of tourists is attributed to a number of factors, such as the tourism potential of the Sultanate, including its strategic geographical location on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula, the natural diversity, mountain ranges, with their valleys and unique caves with a diversity of rocks, as well as its large beautiful desert and ancient historical and cultural monuments.

The Sultanate also has a number of ports for cruise ships travelling in the Middle East, and it embraces a wide range of resorts and luxury hotels, such as Al Bustan Palace Hotel, Ritz-Carlton, Shangri-La Barr al Jissah Resort, the 'Six Senses' Resort in Zighy area in Musandam Governorate and 'Alila', in Al Jabal Al Akhdar.

The Sultanate is also a hub for conference tourism in various political, economic and scientific contexts.
The Muscat International Airport, which is considered the destination for more than 80 international airlines as well as the fleet of Oman Air, the official carrier of the Sultanate, provides air transport services to more than 50 Gulf, Arab and international cities. The Oman Air administration is implementing an ambitious plan to double its flights and destinations during the ninth Five-Year Development Plan from 2016 to 2020.
