LAKE MEAD, ARIZONA: DEEP BLUE WATERS WITH GREAT MOUNTAINS

Lake Mead is considered to be the largest reservoir in the United States in terms of its maximum water capacity. This humongous reservoir is located on River Colorado which is about 39 km from the Strip southeast of the famous Las Vegas in the state of Nevada and Arizona. This amazing lake was formed by the Hoover Dam. Lake Mead as named after the commissioner of the Bureau of Reclamation of U.S, Elwood Mead.
The Lake also offers a National Park Service where recreational opportunities such as boating, hiking, fishing, photography, picnicking and even sightseeing are offer round the year. The lake is home to thousands of desert animals and plants which have adapted to survive the extreme weather conditions here.

Highlights of Lake Mead
•    The lake is approximately 112 miles or 180 kilometers in length
•    It offers a 550 miles or 890 kilometers of beautiful shoreline
•    Its greatest depth is about 500 feet
•    Its surface covers about 247 square miles or 640 km2 when filled to its full capacity
•    It maximum water storage capacity is about 28 million acre-feet

•    The Recreation Area is open throughout the year
•    Some of its beaches and areas are for day visits only
•    The Visitor Center is open from 8:30 in the morning to 4:30 in the evening
•    The National Recreation Area is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Years Day
