THE MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES IN SLOVENIA

And here are the most beautiful places you would want to visit in Slovenia. Being quite a small country Slovenia features almost thousands of caves and some of the most beautiful glacial lakes and waterfalls.
But Slovenia is also rich in mountains which are protected mainly by Triglav National Park and it also boasts nice castles or sea side towns. Let’s take a look on some of the most beautiful places in Slovenia.

TRIGLAV NATIONAL PARK

Triglav National Park is situated in the northwestern part of the country, in the Julian Alps. It is the only national park in Slovenia.
The area of the park is 83.807 ha, its highest point is Triglav with 2,864 meters above sea level, the lowest point is Tolminka with 180 meters above sea level.
Park was named after the highest mountain Triglav, which is located almost in the middle of the protected area.

SOČA RIVER VALLEY

In the western part of the Julian Alps lies the romantic valley of the river Soča, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful wild rivers of Europe.
It rises at an altitude of 1,050 meters, just south of the Vrsic Pass. At a length of 127 km flows through the mountain range, and then flows into the Adriatic Sea.

POSTOJNA CAVE

In Slovenia there are about 900 caves. Postojna Cave, with its size of approximately 20 km2, is one of the largest. Inside the cave runs tourist trains (walking tour would otherwise take all day).
Admission is quite high – 22,90 EUR, but it is worthwhile!

LJUBLJANA

Ljubljana is not only the capital city of Slovenia it is also the nation’s capital too. As a result of its location, it has flourished over the centuries and has even played an important role in the history of the nation.
There are a number of interesting as well as historic sites to visit throughout the city.

BLED

The small town of Bled can be found in the northwestern part of the country. Situated along the shores of a glacial lake which shares the town’s name, the town has grown over the years as a popular destination in the country.
The resort town has flourished on account of its location in the Julian Alps which makes it a very attractive skiing destination in Slovenia.

VINTGAR GORGE

Not far from Lake Bled, you can visit another amazing natural spectacle Vintgar Gorge that was formed by the river Radovna.
The gorge was discovered in 1891, and two years later opened to the public. It is 1600 meters long and 100 meters deep. There are wooden walkways and bridges that lead through the gorge.

MARIBOR

The second largest city in the country is that of Maribor which is home to just under a hundred thousand permanent residents. The historic city has a lot to offer any visitor who makes their way to the nation.

KRANJSKA GORA

Situated along the banks of the Sava Dolinka River the resort town of Kranjska Gora can be found in the northwestern part of the country.
Since it is situated within the Julian Alps, near the nation’s borders with both Italy and Austria, the town has become known as a popular skiing destination in Slovenia.

PORTOROŽ

Perhaps one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country is the coastal city of Portorož. Situated along the shores of the Gulf of Trieste, the town has grown into a popular summer destination for countless people from all over Europe.
It is here where the nation borders with both Croatia as well as Italy.

BOHINJ

In the Julian Alps, you will find a snow basin which is five kilometers at its widest point and stretches for more than twenty kilometers. Known as Bohinj, the basin is consumed by the glacial lake which shares its name.

PIRAN

Situated in the southwestern part of Slovenia along the shores of the Adriatic Sea, you will find the town of Piran which is one of the three most popular resort destinations in the area.
The town is abounding with medieval architecture, narrow cobblestone paths and whitewashed homes. It can be found on a peninsula which shoots out into the Gulf of Piran in the northern part of the Adriatic.

POSTOJNA CAVE

BOVEC

You will find the town of Bovec in the north western part of the country in the Soča Valley. Just to the west are the Julian Alps and Mount Kanin.

KOPER

The city of Koper is a popular tourist destination in the southwestern part of the country. It is one of three of the most important coastal destinations in the nation which covers nearly forty-seven kilometers of the coastlines.

ROGAŠKA SLATINA

The town of Rogaška Slatina can be found in the eastern part of Slovenia. It is popular resort town that is known for its health spas which have been known since the days of the Roman Empire.

IZOLA

KRANJ

BOHINJSKA BISTRICA

The town of Bohinjska Bistrica can be found in the Sava Bohinjka River Valley. It is a popular destination during the winter months as countless people flock to the area to go skiing in the nearby mountains.

KOBARID

You will find the town of Kobarid located close to the nation’s border with Italy. It is situated within the Upper Soča Valley.
The valley has been inhabited by multiple civilizations since prehistoric times and as such, there are many fine archeological sites that can be visited throughout the valley region.

SEŽANA

The town of Sežana can be found along the Slovenian borders along the edges of the Kras Plateau.
It is situated only seventeen kilometers from the Italian city of Trieste for which the town has become a popular border crossing point between the two nations due to the abolishment of immigration and customs checks along the borders.

ŠKOFJA LOKA

You will find the town of Škofja Loka located along the banks where the Selca Sora and Poljane Sora rivers merge. The town and the surrounding countryside boast some of the most picturesque views of Slovenia.

ŠKOCJAN CAVES

Situated only a few kilometers from the nation’s border with Italy is where you will find a popular system of caves in Slovenia – Škocjan Caves which have been designated a World Heritage site.

PTUJ

The oldest city in Slovenia is that of Ptuj. It has been inhabited by countless civilizations throughout the millennia.
There are several archaeological sites that have been uncovered around the city which dates back to the days of the Celts as well as the Romans. The city itself has a number of buildings which date back to the medieval period.
