The Melissani Cave gets its magical effect from the surrounded forests and the mountain slope to the west, making it a place that seems to come real out of a fairy-tale. The plants cover the entrance of the cave. The lake water is blue yet crystal clear. The bottom of lake is all covered with stones of earth tone colours. The colour of rocks at the entrance is stucco to honey-like brown.
The beauty of Melissani Cave was hidden until it was rediscovered by Giannis Petrocheilos in 1951. According to Greek mythology the Melissani Cave was inhabited by Nymphs. It is further described as a place that features a beautiful lake encircled with lush trees. The lake was located to the east of Evmorfia and Agia Dynati peaks.
