10. Tipsoo Lake, Washington, USA
Found at an elevation of 1615 m (5299 ft), the alpine lake shares its popularity with Mount Rainier, spectacularly protruding in the background. In spring and summer the surroundings get covered in colorful flowers, adding an extra charm to the site.
Why to go there?
Amazing views, various easy hiking trails, suitable for the families.
How to get there?
Get there by car using State Route 410. There is a parking lot at the entrance of the park.

9. Abraham Lake, Alberta, Canada
The lake is artificial, however it is nonetheless spectacular. Especially in winter, when frozen water creates these bubbles. Apparently such a spectacular phenomenon is caused by flammable methane gas coming from the depth.
When to go there?
For the frozen bubbles go there in winter, when the temperatures drop below -30 degrees Celsius.

8. Lake Tekapo, Mackenzie Basin, New Zealand
The lake is found in a beautiful place, surrounded with the Southern Alps. The church of the Good Shepherd, built in 1935 on the shores of the lake, is a recognizable site worldwide. The area becomes especially pretty in late spring and early summer when the lupins start blooming.
When to go there?
All year round. To see the blooming lupins go there from mid-November to December.

7. Lake Tahoe, Sierra Nevada, USA
The largest alpine lake and one of the deepest lakes in North America, Tahoe is approximately 2 million years old. Today the area is used for recreation and besides the ski resorts, there is a variety of water sports that attract many tourists.
Why to go there?
Beautiful lake, numerous water activities, ski resorts, hiking trails in the area.
How to get there?
By plane get to Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Get there by train from California or bus from various cities.

6. Gjende Lake, Jotunheimen, Norway
The proglacial lake is 18 km (11 mi) long and is surrounded with the steep mountains. Its striking emerald color is caused by the rock flour, carried here by the Muru river. There are a lot of tourist facilities in the park, making the lake a popular destination.
Why to go there?
Jotunheimen National Park is a favorite tourist attraction, with various hiking trails and climbing opportunities.
How to get there?
Get to the park by bus or train from various cities. In summer you can get around the lake by boat.

5. Lake McDonald, Montana, USA
At 16 km (10 mi) long and over 1.6 km (1 mi) wide the lake, carved by the glaciers, is the largest in Glacier National Park. Surrounded with the Mission Mountains, the lake is a home for various fish species. Bears can also be found around the lake, so be careful.
Why to go there?
See the beautiful lake and its surroundings, hike some of the many trails.
How to get there?
Fly to the Glacier Park International Airport from Seattle, Minneapolis, Chicago, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Salt Lake City or Denver. Also get there by train or car using Highway 2.

4. Carrera Lake, Argentina and Chile
Carrera has many great qualities. Besides being the second deepest lake in South America, having fresh water, whose colors vary between emerald, turquoise, aquamarine and azure, Carrera is surrounded with the Marble Caves!
Why to go there?
The most exciting thing to do here is to go on a boat tour in the Marble Cathedral.
How to get there?
You can take a bus from Coyhaique or Cochrane. Get there by boat from Puerto Rio Tranquilo.

3. Hallstätter Lake, Hallstatt, Austria
The lake is famous for the idyllic village situated on its shores. Hallstatt is a popular tourist destination and offers various activities. In summer visitors can hike around the lake and explore its beautiful surroundings, as well as go boating or swimming in the lake.

2. Kelimutu, Moni, Indonesia
Three crater lakes are situated not elsewhere than on top of a volcano. Found on the Flores Island in the national park, which is also worth visiting, lakes’ colors are red, green and blue. However their coloration constantly changes due to the fumes.
How to get there?
There is an easy access because Kelimutu is a popular tourist destination. The closest airports are in Maumere and Ende. Tourists often fly here from Bali. A trail from Moni leads to the site.

1. Lake Como, Lombardy, Italy
One of the most famous lakes in Europe due to the various activities it provides and the villas on its shores, owned by the celebrities. Its curvy shape creates a very long shoreline, thus making plenty of space for recreational purposes. Nice villages around the lake provide accommodation all year round.
