Methoni Castle – Impressive Ancient Fortress on the Beach in Greece

Methoni Castle – Impressive Ancient Fortress on the Beach in Greece
Methoni Castle, Peloponnese, Greece. The impressive very well preserved castle is standing on the beach, overlooking the Ionian Sea. It was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and served as a fortress. Bourtzi – a prison – was built in the 16th century on the islet by the Turks and linked to the castle by a road.
Methoni is one of the largest castles in the Mediterranean. Visitors love exploring the historic buildings. The surroundings are also great, providing a romantic trail on the beach. It is even available to swim here. Methoni – a picturesque village where the castle is found – is also worth visiting and exploring its architecture.
Why to go there?
Great historic architecture, scenic village and surroundings.
When to go there?
All year round. It is said that in winter the gusts of wind revive the spirits of unjustly killed prisoners of Bourtzi and their moaning can be heard.
How to get there?
Get there from Methoni village, which is 1 hour drive from Kalamata Airport, 4 hours of a very scenic drive from Athens. Drive there by car or bus.
