HvÍtserkur, Iceland | This monolith lies off the shores of the Vatnsnes Peninsula, looking like an animal lumbering its way to land. According to legend, the giant rock is actually a petrified troll. The fiend wanted to tear down the bells of a nearby convent, but the sunlight caught him first, turning the tyrant to stone and sentencing him to a fate of forever standing in the cool water.
