West of St Louis Cathedral is Forest Park, an area of open space 2 miles long by 1 mile wide. This was the site of the 1904 World's Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exhibition, marking the centenary of the Louisiana Purchase. The park is home to numerous attractions, including the St Louis Art Museum and the St Louis Zoo.
Jefferson Memorial
On the north side of Forest Park is the Jefferson Memorial (1904), home of the Missouri Historical Society. The museum maintains rich collections of material on the history of Missouri and St Louis and the Lindbergh Room, commemorating Charles Lindbergh's solo flight over the Atlantic in the "Spirit of St Louis".
St Louis Art Museum
At the southwest corner of Forest Park is the City Art Museum (1904), which has a fine collection of works of art of many different cultures. It covers from prehistoric times to the present day, including Meissen porcelain, European and American sculpture and pictures, and Chinese bronzes. The impressive old building overlooks an expansive green space, pond, and fountains.
Jewel Box
The City of St. Louis built the Jewel Box, an Art Deco floral conservatory, in 1936. It has been renovated and houses hundreds of plants including seasonal flowers. The interior of the Jewel Box includes a large fountain and hanging baskets with tiers of glass to allow in the sunshine.
Missouri History Museum
Located in the Jefferson Memorial Building, the Missouri History Museum houses a variety of exhibits and educational resources including the permanent exhibition, Seeking St. Louis. The collections include photographs, prints, manuscripts, media archives and architectural history.
St Louis Zoo
The St Louis Zoo has more than 6,600 wild animals from around the world. The River's Edge and Big Cat Country are highlights as well as Jungle of the Apes. Discovery Corner is a hands-on exhibit with friendly bunnies and goats as well as butterflies in flight.
Science Center
The Science Center in the southeast corner of the Forest Park offers a hands-on exploration of science and technology, particularly absorbing for children. This museum is targeted towards children and youth, making it a popular family activity.
