Hanging Monastery, Metéora, Greece | Metéora’s hilly cliffs were an ideal location for 14th century monks to build their monasteries. The isolation made contemplation easier and the impossible climb ensured that marauding Turks didn’t disturb these Greek Orthodox clergymen. Dress conservatively, and get ready for a bit of an adventure as you climb to the top of the cliffs. Visitors are no longer required to come up in a basket as the monks once did.
