Strange places to visit

The door to hell, Turkmenistan
Sometimes you just want to do something totally different. Visit places that might not be on the regular tourist map and crawl, jump or dive into an adventure.  The world is packed with spots like these and a bucket list could be endless but who would want to read an endless blog. So here is just a few of them.

MUSA, underwater museum, Mexico

Musa Mexico
How about diving to an underwater  museum where you swim around an art exhibition that consists of over 460 statues made by the English artists Jason DeCaires Taylor and other local artists. There are two galleries, one being at eight meters depth and thereby suitable for both divers and snorkelers and the other four meters and only permitted for snorkeling. So now just put on your swimsuit and jump in and become the ultimate aesthete.

Meteora Monasteries, Greece

meteora monestry

Hike up to one or more of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Meteora Monasteries. The 24 monasteries  were built in the 15th century each on top of rock pinnacles which rise over 300 m above the Penesas valley. Now only four of them are still religious communities of the Orthodox Church. It’s amazing to think about how they managed to built these Monasteries as they had to hoist up the stones vertically alongside the cliffs. So if your feet or back hurt while you climb the stairs you can be grateful that you only need to carry your own weight.

Reed flute cave, China

How about crawling into a colorful cave in China? The Reed Flute Cave (Ludy Yan) gets its name from the verdant reeds that grow outside the caves and are perfect for making flutes. Inside the cave you can see stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars and stone flowers which are all glistening in colorful lights to feast your eyes. Inside the cave is also a natural lake that is really impressive to view with all the lights surrounding it.

Quinta da Regaleira, Portugal

Let your imagination go and you could feel like your part of a magical world.

The door to hell, Turkmenistan

The door to hell, Turkmenistan
A crater that was accidentally created when Soviet scientists were drilling for oil in the Karakum Desert in 1971. They found one of the largest gas reserves in the world  and to get rid of the gas it was decided to burn it off so it wouldn’t harm the nearby villagers. It was  suspected that the gas would burn out in few weeks however is it still burning. Best to visit when it is dark so you can see the flames of hell burn brightly.

Swing at the End of the World, Ecuador

swing at the end of the world
Find the daredevil in you and hop onto the swing at the edge of a canyon at the End of the World. First you’ll need to hike up the path to Bellavista from the edge of Baños, Ecuador and when you reach a viewpoint you’ll find an old tree house with a swing dangling from it. So there you can find the child within you  and swing like there is no tomorrow just don’t jump off like you did as a child to find out how far away you can land.
