Hilary Cooper famously said “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.”
In the sprit of that quote, we found 11 amazing waterfalls that are guaranteed to take your breath away.
We really encourage you all to go see them all in real life.
1. Seljalandsfoss, Iceland
One of the best known (and most beautiful) waterfalls in Iceland. It is is situated between two other widely known waterfalls, Selfoss and Skógafoss. What makes the 60 metres high waterfalls so unique though, is that you can walk behind it and enjoy its true beauty.
2. Barron Falls, Australia
Located in Queensland, Australia, Barron Falls is a massive cascading waterfall you should go see during the wet season as this is the only time the falls flow with force. The rest of the time the nearby powerstation draws off a considerable volume of the Barron River, reducing the falls to just a trickle, sometimes totally drying it out.
3. Plitvicer, Croatia
The Plitvice Lake National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Southeast Europe and its protected area is home to numerous small and big stunning waterfalls. Definitely worth a visit.
4. Kaieteur Falls, Guyana
The Kaieteur Falls are among the most powerful waterfalls in the world and with a height of 251 metres they are about four times higher than the Niagara Falls. According to an old legend, Kaieteur was named after an old unpleasant man who was placed in a boat and shoved in the fall by his relatives. This is why Kaieteur translates to “old man fall”.
5. Svartifoss, Iceland
Located in the Southeast of Iceland, Svartifoss is surrounded by dark lava columns which is why the waterfall is named “black waterfall”. Its columnar jointing formations seem unique but can also bee seen at the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, the Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, USA and on the island of Staffa in Scotland.
6. Erawan Waterfall, Thailand
The Erawan Falls are located in western Thailand. They are named after the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology, because the top tier of the falls is said to resemble the elephant’s head.
7. Bigar Waterfall, Romania
Bigar is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania – and one of the most unusual waterfalls in the world considering the way the water spreads and falls in tiny shreds of water. Another unique fact: It is located exactly on the 45th parallel north, the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole.
8. Thi Lo Su Waterfall, Thailand
Some people claim it is the largest and highest waterfalls in Thailand. Yet, it has never been officially surveyed, so all numbers are only approximate. Still, just looking at this photo, it is most certainly one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Thailand.
9. Ventisquero Colgante Falls, Chile
The Venitsquero Colgante Falls are one of the most impressive falls in South America, yet little known. They start from the base of the Hanging Glacier and fall down from a hanging valley. The blue wall of the glacier towering high above the waterfall and the impressive rainforest next to it make for amazing scenery.
10. Niagara Falls , USA / Canada
The Niagara Falls consist of three different waterfalls: The American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls in the USA and the Canadian Horseshoe Falls in Canada. The falls thereby serve as an international border between the US and Canada. They are also occasionally lit in colours of the rainbow during the night making them even more beautiful.
11. Baatara Gorge Waterfall, Lebanon
The Waterfall in Tannourine, Lebanon, is located in a cave of Jurassic limestone, also known as the “Cave of the Three Bridges”. If you want to visit this rather unusual waterfall, make sure to go in March or April and it is mainly visible during the ice-melting months.
