Bayon Temple, Angkor Thom, Cambodia | Huge smiling stone faces of the Buddhist deity Avalokiteshvara welcome you to Bayon Castle, keeping a watch over the grounds from each compass point. The guardians are said to resemble King Jayavarman VII, who built the grounds to represent the intersection of heaven and earth. As you walk around you discover more and more of the statues eyeing you closely with a total of 216 faces serving as Jayavarman’s eyes and ears watching over the kingdom.
