Every year, Croatia’s long stretch of stunning Adriatic coastline draws increasing numbers of tourists, who flock to the renowned cities of Dubrovnik, Split, and Zadar. To northwest of these cities lies theIstrian peninsula, where visitors will be rewarded with stunning beaches, impressive Roman ruins, and a unique cultural vibe.
Nearly all of Istria´s main towns are situated on the peninsula´s west coast, a short distance across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. Many visitors arrive via the many ferry connections with Venice. Alternatively, there are bus and train connections from Slovenia, Zagreb and Trieste to the north, and an international airport in the main town of Pula, near the southern tip of the peninsula.

The city of Pula
Pula is home to one of the largest surviving Roman amphitheaters, well worth a tour of both the arena and the caverns underneath. Since 1954 the arena has also hosted a large international film festival, held every year in July. Pula makes a great base for exploring nearby beaches and the lovelyBrijuni islands, a favorite holiday destination of former Yugoslav leader Tito.

Continuing up the coast from Pula, travelers will find the lovely city of Rovinj. The city was an important one in the Venetian Empire, and the Venetian defensive walls have been preserved. Rovinj sits on a lovely wide bay, and its maze of narrow cobblestone streets are sure to enchant any visitor.

Continuing up the coast is Istria’s third major town, Porec. This city is home to a number of Venetian mansions, as well as Istria’s most impressive church, the Euphrasian Basilica, constructed during the Byzantine Empire.

Travelers who venture inland, away from the more heavily touristed coast, will be rewarded with a glimpse into Mediterranean village life. The area is quickly developing as a renowned gourmet food destination, particularly lauded for its wine, olive oil and truffles.
When planning a Croatian holiday, it would be wise not to overlook the superb blend of Mediterranean attractions that Istria has on offer.
