Lake Titicaca, Peru, Bolivia. The largest lake in South America is found high in the Andes, neighboring two countries. It is home for 530 aquatic species, water birds and more: since ancient times people lived here too. Not only the lake is surrounded with small villages. There are unique 44 artificial floating islands, inhabited by people, known as the Uros.
Uros tribe originates from the Incan civilization times. Uros people have always led a very simple lifestyle and yet they outlived the glorious Incas. The floating islands were created for protection, as they could be easily navigated. They are made from reed, that grow in Titicaca, and are inhabited by 2000 people. They live from fishing and tourism, since the islands are part of the Titicaca National Reserve and are the main tourist attraction.
Why to go there?
The panoramic views and the lake itself are a great reason to visit Titicaca. However you will hardly see anything like the Uru islands anywhere else. Tourism is well developed here, providing tours and various facilities.
When to go there?
Anytime – the temperatures hardly vary all year round.
How to get there?
The tours to the islands take off from the city of Puno located on the shore of the lake, on the Peruvian side. The nearest airport is in Juliaca 50 km away. Also get there by train or bus from Cuzco, Arequipa and La Paz. By ferry boat from Copacabana straight to Lake Titicaca.
