Contained within its comparatively small geographical borders, Armenia boasts some stunning natural scenery. One of the best examples of the country’s striking countryside can be found near the village of Khndzoresk in Armenia’s southeast.
Khndzoresk is a quaint village typical of Armenia’s lovely countryside. However, it is most notable for the stunning gorge lying beside it (indeed, the name of the village translates roughly to “Deep Gorge”).

The canyon makes for a great day-hike, as visitors can observe up close the unique rock formations that dot the area. The gorge is also filled with numerous caves, which were actually inhabited by humans up until the 1950s. The view from the heights, before descending into the canyon, is truly stunning: green tree-covered slopes interspersed with chunks of gray rock, and black cave entrances.

A quirky draw to the area is a long pedestrian bridge completed in 2012. Like something straight out of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, the 160-meter narrow metal suspension bridge allows visitors to walk precariously 35 meters above the rocky gorge. For those who can stomach the swaying and bouncing heights, the bridge provides an unparalleled view of the canyon directly below.
Location of Khndzoresk Gorge
Khndzoresk lies only a short-distance on the main highway from the town of Goris, which itself is located about 250 km southeast of the capital Yerevan.
