Nessebar
History of Nessebar
The history of Nessebar begins with the Thracians settling in what was then known as Menebria at the onset of the sixth century BC. The Greeks then colonized the town and around 425 BC, it was under Athenian rule. Remnants of the acropolis, a Greek agora (city center), and a temple of Apollo can be found within the city walls.
After the Romans took over the city in 71 BC, the city remained largely independent. The Byzantine Empire, after the fall of the Roman occupation, and the Bulgarians fought furiously over the lands in which Nessebar was settled.
It wasn’t until 864 AD that the Second Bulgarian Empire was able to successfully recapture the ancient city. Nessebar was then ruled by the Ottoman Empire from 1453 until the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878.
The intriguing history of this ancient settlement was brought back to life in 1925, as the restoration of the historic Old Town was brought about by the expansion of Nessebar, creating the New Town. This Bulgarian resort has been an extremely popular tourist attraction ever since.
