The Summer Palace, Beijing, China. A gorgeous historic ensemble of palaces, lakes and gardens is found northwest of Beijing. It is protected by UNESCO and considered one of the finest examples of Chinese garden art: all different features – natural hills, lakes as well as pavilions, temples, bridges and palaces – make a harmonious and aesthetically compelling site.
First palace was built on the hill here in the 12th century – when emperor Wányán Liàng established a capital in Beijing. The design has been shaped by the artists throughout the centuries – they have adopted various styles from all over China. Today it is a popular recreational area, where visitors can enjoy a tranquil getaway from the busy city and have a nice walk, admiring lush greenery and impeccable architecture.
