Not far away from the coastline of Sicily, there is a small, wonderful island Favignana, that hides extraordinary beauty, crystal clear waters and interesting history. Known as a characteristic shape of its coastline similar to butterfly wings, and it is the biggest Aegadian Islands in Italy. Favignana AKA Aegusa is the largest, then comes Levanzo AKA Phorbantia and the mallest Marettimo.
The stripped landscapes hide ancient secrets thousands of years old, and the sea surrounding one of the largest fish schools in the Mediterranean.

The beaches here are poor with sand, and those that want to use the water should go through the rocks and enter the crystal clear waters of Favignana. The Cala Rossa beach is here and it is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
The coastline is rich with cave systems that were homes to the first people of Favignana and used them as a shelter form the pirate attacks. In some of them there are still drawings of the paleolithic period.

Favignana is the island of contrasts. In the center of the city there is a prison with many Italian thugs. This tradition is kept from the time of the ancient Romans, when the most distant islands were used as prisons.

Above the city there are the ruins of the castle of Santa Caterina, built by the Arabs, then expanded by Normand people, and the kings of Bourbon dynasty used it as a prison. Today this is just ruins that are reminder of the turbulent history of the island of Favignana.
