Vatnajökull, Iceland. This is one of the largest and thickest glaciers in Europe, covering 8% of Iceland. The Vatna Glacier is 400 m (1,300 ft) thick on average, sometimes reaching 1 000 m (3 300 ft)! Several volcanoes are hiding underneath the ice and sometimes erupt, causing a long plume. It also features the beautiful waterfall of Svartifoss.
Vatnajökull National Park was established in 2008. It encompasses a huge area that includes famous Skaftafell. The visitors can choose a variety of activities. Numerous hiking trails enable to explore the reserve, while campgrounds allow to spend a night and continue your trip the next day. But the most interesting, intriguing and compelling attraction of course are the ice caves. Those crystal blue structures are the most beautiful in Iceland. Visitors are offered ice cave tours that include picking up and supplying a gear.
Why to go there?
The unspoiled natural environment and unique ice caves are among the best attractions in the country, all found in this reserve.
When to go there?
Vatnajökull National Park provides all year round activities. The campground is open from May to October. The ice cave tours are offered from November to March.
How to get there?
By plane from Reykjavík to Höfn airport. Also get there by bus or car.
