Maria Island, Australia. Located next to Tasmania, the entire island is designated as a national park! Although it is small – covering an area of only 115.5 km2 (44.6 sq mi) – it nevertheless has an abundance of natural wonders. The mountainous landscape dominates the location and features rich wildlife as well as historic ruins.
The site features the award winning Maria Island Walk – a route, which features versatile sections and breathtaking views. The path stretches through a rugged terrain, bush tracks as well as soft sandy beaches. However it is not hard and suitable for anyone. Popular sites among many are the Painted Cliffs, that feature colorful patterns, and the Fossil Cliffs, containing fossils. Most of the roads are also good for bicycling, while there hardly are any motor vehicles on the island!
Why to go there?
The small island features one of the best hiking routes in Australia. Visitors can walk it on a guided tours, that also provide an accommodation, since it takes around 4 days to complete it. However Maria Island also attracts day trippers, that visit from Tasmania.
When to go there?
Anytime – the climate is mild here all year round.
How to get there?
By boat from Hobart, Tasmania. Get around by bike or on foot.
