After a few relaxing days on Koh Muk, we headed back to Trang so we could catch the local bus around toward Phuket. We then spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day celebrating in the lap of luxury at the Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa. It was heavenly and a wonderful break from the hostels and cheap hotels we have been staying in most of our trip. You can see how amazing it was by checking out the photos here.
The day after Christmas we sadly had to leave paradise, but we were excited for our next stop. We headed north on our little scooter we rented for a mere $8 a day. The most hilarious part of the scooter ride was not the fact that we drove the scooter much further than most locals would ever drive it (~25 miles), but that we had both our large backpacks and our 2 small day packs on the bike with us. Sorry to say we don’t have a picture of that!
Once we arrived in Phang Nga town we realized it was very similar in feel to how Trang had been to us. Definitely off the tourist radar, but still with interesting sites to see around town. We found a nice, inexpensive hotel and planned our excursion that had brought us to the town. We booked an all day boat tour taking us to see the highlights of Phang Nga Bay. The area itself is spectacular with its incredible caves and enormous limestone rock formations that seem to jump out from the ocean. One of the most well known is one called Ko Tapu. This is what locals call it, but for most others out there it is known as James Bond Island. The rock formation became famous in 1974 when it was featured in the James Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun. After the boat tour we celebrated with martinis in honor of James Bond…okay so maybe it was really just some Thailand Beers
