Regional airports - Muscat Airport

In addition to the new airports under construction in Muscat and Salalah, there are currently three (3) regional airports under construction, in Sohar, Ras Al Hadd and Al Duqm. Each of these regional airports has a passenger terminal capacity of 250,000 Passengers per Annum (PPA) and a total passenger terminal floor area of 6000 m2. The runways at these airports are all 4000 meters in length, capable of serving the world`s largest aircraft, the Airbus A380.

Ad Duqm

The coastal city of Ad Duqm, in the south east of Oman, is planned to be Oman`s next major industrial and shipping hub, with the potential to attract substantial investment and industrial and commercial development related to the oil shipping industry. Work is currently underway to develop a modern seaport, with a dry dock being built and Ad Duqm Airport is currently being built as part of wider development in the Ad Duqm area.

Besides providing business investors, company executives and government officials with a speedy and convenient mode of transport, the airport also has the potential to open up Ad Duqm to tourist wishing to explore this part of the Sultanate.

The Ad Duqm airport is expected to be operational by 2014.

Sohar

The coastal city of Sohar, the main city in the Batinah region, is located 220km northwest of Muscat and is on the main road transport route between the Sultanate of Oman and the Emirate of Dubai. Over recent years, Sohar, and the wider Batinah region, have attracted significant industrial and commercial infrastructure investments.

-“ Sohar Airport, about 10km northwest of Sohar, will provide an alternative, quicker route for travelers wishing to access Sohar and the north of Oman. The airport will also serve as a new gateway for cargo and courier traffic in northern Oman and, in the future, will ease congestion pressure on Sultan Qaboos Port in Muscat. In addition, Sohar Airport will serve as an emergency alternative to Muscat Airport for passengers and cargo coming into the Sultanate.

The Airport is being built within the proximity of the major commercial, industrial and economic centres of Sohar including the Port of Sohar Special Economic Zone. It will complement the future plans for a major expressway and rail network which will underpin the port city`s eventual transformation into a major industrial and economic hub on the Batinah coast.

The airport is expected to be operational by 2014.

Ras Al Hadd

Oman is home to five of the seven species of turtles and the beaches at Ras Al Jinz in the Sharqiya region are home to some of the rarest turtles in the world. Beaches in the region attract thousands of visitors every year, hoping to observe turtles in their natural habitat.

Ras Al Hadd Airport, located near Sur in the Sharqiya region, aims to offer tourists the chance to avoid long road commutes from Muscat. The airport will complement the development of a number of eco-tourist projects along Oman`s eastern coast, including projects to protect endangered turtles.

A concentrated effort exists to develop the area in a manner consistent with luxury and eco-tourism, which will attract selective tourists who have a specific interest in eco-tourism to Oman.

The airport is expected to be operational by 2014.
